Career

Practiced in Columbia, 1887-1893. Established Canal Dime Savings Bank, 1893. Acquired control of Loan & Exchange Bank of Columbia, 1898, and merged the two banks under name of Loan & Exchange Bank of Columbia, also absorbing Central National Bank, February 1902.

Nationalized the Loan & Exchange Bank, July 4, 1903, as National Loan & Exchange Bank, of which was president 1903-1927, Chairman of the Board, since 1927, his son, Thomas J., succeeding as president. Director Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States. State chairman for South Carolina. of 1st, 2d, 3d and 4th Liberty Loans and chairman 5th Federal Reserve District for Victory Liberty Loan.
