He received his Doctor of Philosophy in 1949.
Rasmussen worked for many years as a lektor. From 1948 to 1964 he was literary critic for the newspaper Aftenposten. His first literary effort was at 20 years of age when he produced the novel Østen og vesten in 1923.
His last novel, En norsk bygdelegende, was a dystopian vision of the future, which came out posthumously in 1966.
