Eikan was born in Kyoto as the son of Kunitsuna Minamoto. According to other record he was born in 1032.

He entered priesthood under the guidance of Shinkan of the Zenrinji Temple in Kyoto. Studied the doctrines of the Sanron, Hossa and Kegon sects in Nara. Carved a 15-foot image of Buddha in the Zenrinji Temple. Said to have invoked the name of Buddha to 60,000 times a day and used to preach to convicts in prison.
