Eisen Ikeda

Background

Eisen Ikeda was born in 1790.

Education

He first studied painting under Hakkeisai Kono and later became a disciple oi Eizan Kikuiawa, the painter.

Career

After this he and Hiroshige jointly painted 69 stages of the Kiso Highway and also painted color illustrations for story books, lanterns and kites.

Achievements

• Was also a clever writer. His collection of essays titled Mumyo-o Essays is a valuable source of historical data of his time.
