Eison studied esoteric Buddhism under Shin-e.
As chief priest of the Saidaiji Temple, he, together with Priest Kakusei, restored his Ritsu sect to prosperity. The Ritsu sect emphasized observance of Buddha’s commandments. According to legend, he prayed at the Hachiman Shrine at Otokoyama, a Shinto institution, for victory over the Mongolian expeditionary forces against Japan in 1282, causing a turbulent religious controversy. Eison was strict in observing Buddha's commandment against killing creatures and once destroyed wickerwork fish traps on the Uji River.
