Eizan Kikugawa was born in 1787. He was the son of Eiji, an artist of the Kano school who changed to ukiyoe painting.

At first Eizan Kikugawa adopted his father's style, but when he became a disciple of Nanrei Suzuki, he fell under the influence of Hokusai Katsushika, and developed a style of his own, to become the father of Kikukawa school of ukiyoe. Among his many disciples, Eisen Ikeda was the most distinguished.
