This book is written for laypeople and non-specialists such as teachers, administrators, politicians, nurses and other health service employees. They may each have various reasons for an interest in current transplantation medicine and in future possibilities for repair of organs and tissues. Also, some prospective patients and their relatives might have a natural interest in the book. Everybody is exposed to a flow of hot news in the media about scientific advances in the field of reparative medicine. Many new scientific results may appear promising and hold out hope for treatment and cure to some patients. For other readers, the results undoubtedly create fear of the future. The new insight into biological processes and advances in biotechnology will also bring about a possibility for abuse. An attempt at creating a human clone is one terrifying example. However, much - all too much - of the information presented in the media is incomplete and often misleading. As a result, the premature hope or fear may well be based upon misunderstanding or ignorance. The aim of the book is to giver the reader a sober-minded presentation of possibilities and problems in transplantation medicine as related to the major organs.
