Elaine Athene Backus, American Entomologist, educator. Achievements include discover and study of the sensory organs that mediate feeding in leafhoppers, understanding how the feeding of Empoasca leafhoppers cause damage to crop plants to develop resistant cropsvia genetic engineering, research in and development of advanced electronic monitors for study of homopteran feeding behavior, including screening crop plants for resistance.
