Julie Donnelly has been blind since the age of 8, as a result of glaucoma. She worked as a switchboard operator in a London bank, to which she was escorted every day by her yellow Labrador guide dog Bruno. To her, Bruno was a lifeline, a release from the prison of the white stick and a nightmare of exhausting tension which at one time drove her to invent any excuse for refusing to step out of the safe cocoon of her home. Everest never entered her head in those days. For someone with as much adventuring spirit and curiosity about the world as Julie has, the frustration of physical handicap was hard to bear. It was when she met Elaine Brook that her life suddenly opened up. She found in their friendship the warmth and understanding of a kindred spirit and a fresh window on to the world. For Elaine is an experienced mountaineer who has travelled widely in North and South America, spent much of the last few years in her beloved Himalayas, where she shares the life of Nepalese mountain people in whose language she is fluent. The adventure Elaine and Julie planned and undertook together - to trek in winter to the 18,000-foot summit of Kala Patthar, 500 feet above Everest Base Camp in Nepal - seemed to many unthinkable. Neither of them had any money, and while Julie summoned up sponsors by telephone, Elaine went to Nepal as a tour courier, to make local arrangements with Sherpa porters. This account of their astonishing achievement is far more than one of indomitable courage and derring-do. It is also a moving story of inner exploration, told with a lightness of touch and unfailing humour, which will be an inspiration to us all.
