Assistant to attorney general of Illinois, 1881-1883, 1885-1893, 1901-1905. State’s attorney for Sangamon County, Illinois, 1896-1900. Member Illinois Senate, 1915-1917.

Delegate Republican National Convention, 1916, 20. Elected judge Circuit Court, 7th Judicial Circuit, to fill vacancy, March 1917, and reëlected June 1921, for term ending June 1927. Declined reëlection; member of law firm Smith & Friedmeyer, 1900-1917.
