This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Georges Duhamel (1884-1966), was a French author. Between...)
Georges Duhamel (1884-1966), was a French author. Between 1906 and 1909 he founded l'Abbaye de Créteil with Charles Vildrac. The group brought together poets, writers, musicians and painters. From 1912, he became an editor of the literary review Mercure de France. He trained as a doctor, and during World War I worked as an army surgeon for four years. This painful experience provided the subject matter for two narratives, Vie des Martyrs (1917) and Civilization (which won him the prix Goncourt in 1918). Once he returned to civilian life, Duhamel dedicated himself to literature. In 1920, he published Confession de Minuit, the first of a series featuring the anti-hero Salavin. He travelled to many conferences in France and abroad, speaking brilliantly of French language and culture as well as promoting the idea of a civilisation built on the human heart rather than technological progress. In 1935, he was elected to the 30th chair at the Académie Française. During World War II Duhamel's work was banned by the Germans. After the war, Duhamel was named president of the Alliance Française and returned to his public speaking.

(Office of the President of the Empire State Society, Sons...)
Office of the President of the Empire State Society, Sons of the American Revolution. New York, May n, 1897. A FEW years ago the suggestion was made to The Century Company by Mr. John Winfield Scott, a member of the Executive Committee of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, appointed a committee of one for the Executive Committee, that The Century Company should issue a book in which should be set forth in a manner attractive to young people the principles contended for in the American Revolution, and a description of the institutions of the Government. The result of this suggestion was embodied in The Century Book for Young A mericans, the story ot the trip of a party of young people to the city of Washington, written by Elbridge S. Brooks and richly illustrated from the great store of material which the publishers possessed. The book was issued in the autumn of 1894, indorsed by the National Society, and with an introduction by General Horace Porter, President-G eneral. I ts success has been great, both as a book for children at home and for supplemental reading in schools, and in 1896 it was followed by The Century Book of Famous A mericans, written also by Mr. Brooks, telling of the adventures of the same young people and their well-posted uncle on a journey to the homes of historic A mericans, Washington, Hamilton, Webster, Clay, Jefferson, Franklin. Lincoln, Grant, and others. It was issued under the auspices of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The same publishers purpose offering to the public a volume in which the story of the American Revolution, from Lexington to Yorktown, shall be told in such a way as will interest young readers, and, at the same time, possess valuable information for old as well as young in its descriptions of the historic scenes made famous during the struggle of our for (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

Elbridge Streeter Brooks was born on April 14, 1846 at Lowell, Massachussets, the son of Elbridge Gerry Brooks, a Universalist minister and anti-slavery man, and Martha (Monroe) Brooks.
During the boyhood of his son, the elder Brooks served churches in Bath, Maine, Lynn, Massachussets, and New York City, and at the public schools of Lynn and New York the boy received his preliminary education.
In 1861 he entered the Free Academy, afterward the College of the City of New York, where he remained only until the middle of his junior year.
Elbridge Brooks' lifelong connection with publishing houses began at this time with a clerkship with D. Appleton & Company. In 1873 he was with Ford & Company and Sheldon & Company; in 1876 he became head of the English educational and subscription department of E. Steiger & Company; and in 1879 he joined the staff of the Publishers' Weekly.
He was from 1883 to 1885 literary editor and dramatic critic on the Brooklyn Daily Times.
In 1884 he became associate editor of St. Nicholas Magazine and in 1887 removed to Somerville, Massachussets, to become an editor for D. Lothrop & Company. His relations with this firm were suspended for a short time between 1892 and 1895, during financial troubles and reorganization, but thereafter continued until his death. In 1891-93 he was editor of Wide Awake.
