She studied history at Street Anne"s College, Oxford, England, before becoming a producer of television and radio current affairs programmes for the British Broadcasting Corporation.
She is also a trustee of the charity Listening Montmorency was her first book, published by Scholastic Corporation in 2003, and quickly followed by three sequels. Updale is married to broadcaster James Naughtie. She has three children.
She studied at the new Centre for Editing Lives and Letters at Queen Mary College, University of London, and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in History in 2007.
