Eli continued his training for a few years as a draftsman with various New York firms. Having opened his own office in the city. Mr. Benedict designed a number of private schools and colleges, and as a member and elder of the North Presbyterian Church at 525 W. 155th St. he was particularly interested in church work. Among the several buildings of that type, he planned in New York were the Olmstead Avenue Presbyterian Church in 1912. Woodlawn Heights Church, Memorial Church House for the North Presbyterian Congregation in 1921 and Sunday School building for the Mount Washington Presbyterian Church in 1914. During the first World War, he was employed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard where he worked on plans for the United States. Naval Depot at Lake Denmark, and buildings on Loma Island on the Hudson.
