Admitted to Arkansas bar, began practice of law, Fayetteville, 1856. Wrote editorials for Arkansian (newspaper), 1857-1860. State chairman Arkansas Democratic Party, 1860.

Secretary Arkansas convention which enacted secession ordinance, 1861. Served as lieutenant colonel Indian regiment, Confederate Army, 1861-1863. Member Confederate Congress from Arkansas Indian Territory, 1863-1865.

Owner tobacco factory, 1865-1868. Practiced law, Fort Smith, Arkansas Indian Territory, 1868-1890.
