Admitted to bar, Baltimore, 1842. Practiced law, Philadelphia, from 1843. Active in reform movements, Philadelphia.

Expert in tax and equity cases. Professor of law University of Pennsylvania, 1852-1872. Active Unionist during Civil War, commanded artillery company of militia, helped raise bounty funds for Pennsylvania.

Vice provost Law Academy of Philadelphia Author: A Treatise on the Law of Partition by Writ in Pennsylvania, 1847. Editor: Treatise on the Lien of Mechanic and Material Men in Pennsylvania (Sergeant), 1846.
