(In the summer of 1995, New York artist Elisha Cooper hit ...)
In the summer of 1995, New York artist Elisha Cooper hit the road to capture America with his paint brush. Fifteen thousand miles and 136 sketches later, his cross-country odyssey resulted in Off the Road - a visual diary that captures the spirit of places as majestic as Yellowstone and as quaint as Alice, North Dakota. Beginning with the Manhattan skyline, he heads north through the heart of New England, loops back down through the deep south, breezes past the arid Southwest, hits the California coast, and swings back through the Plains states on his way home to New York City.

Acclaimed author-illustrator Elisha Cooper paints the quiet magic of a good-night walk as the neighborhood settles into itself at the end of the day. As a child and parent walk down the block to the bay and turn to walk back home, evening falls upon the neighborhood. As the walk begins, the squirrels are in the yards, the boys are mowing lawns, a neighbor is baking a pie, and someone is mailing a letter. When the child and parent turn to walk back home, the apple pie is down from the windowsill, the leaves are raked up, and the postman has picked up.

Elisha Cooper was born on February 22, 1971 in New Haven, Connecticut, United States, into the family of Peter and Diana Cooper.
Elisha studied at the Yale College where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1993. While at Yale, he brought sketchbooks with him on road trips. He also wrote for the New Journal, a magazine, usually about things he had done - like bottling beer at a factory or playing in a game. Elisha spent the summer before his senior year in Idaho working for the Forest Service (inspired by Norman Maclean’s short stories) and wrote in a notebook, which later turned out to be his first published book.
In 1993 Elisha came to New York, where he got a job as a messenger for the New Yorker magazine. His first book "A Year in New York" appeared soon. At this time Elisha fell in love with books, and with New York. Then he quit his job and drove around the country, sleeping in the front seat, showering in rivers, and seeing what he could find. That book was called "Off the Road: An American Sketchbook."
For his first two kids’ books, Elisha spent a fall hanging out at country fairs and ballparks. He likes nosing around and looking for the weird, something that hits him, a goofy gesture. Nosing around paid off for Cooper’s book "Country Fair", an illustrated look at one day in the life of the popular rural event, from corn-shucking to award-winning cows. Cooper next turned his gaze to baseball, for his book "Ballpark."
Currently, Elisha Cooper is the author of many children’s books, including Train, Farm, Homer, Beach, Dance! and Big Cat, Little Cat. His newest memoir Falling: A Father, a Daughter, and a Journey Back was published by Pantheon in June 2016.

2012Quotations: "In some way, I've never evolved. I'm most happy when I'm about to set off on a trip with a sketchbook in my back pocket. There's a lot of cool stuff out there. For me, books are a way of looking. I still have tantrums when I can't draw cows."
Cooper currently lives in New York City with his wife and two daughters.
