From the Preface: "My aim in writing about Whistler has been a very simple one. I have wished merely to express the kind of pleasure in his work that may be taken by an un-technical observer, believing that no special vision is required to get from it the satisfaction given by any genuine form of art."

Elizabeth Luther Cary was born on May 1876 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. She was the daughter of Edward and Elisabeth (Luther) Cary. Her father was editor of the Brooklyn Union and later became a New York Times editorial writer.
Elisabeth was educated at home by her father, and later studied art for ten years under Charles Melville and Eleanor E. Sismster.
Between 1893 and 1897 Elizabeth Cary undertook several translations from the French of nonfiction works. She wrote several original works from 1898 to 1907, and designed, wrote, edited and published a monthly art magazine called The Scrip from 1905 to 1908. It was this magazine that prompted the offer for her to join The New York Times as its only art critic (March 21, 1908), a post she held until her death. Her criticism also sometimes appeared in Camera Work.
Elizabeth Cary wrote on many aspects of art, ancient and modem, and, according to her obituary in The New York Times, "always kept a fresh point of view. . . . Without losing sight of the validity of tradition, she was yet able to find beauty and significance in the many departures."
