Elizabeth Matthews graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, Virginia, in 1948. She received her Master of Science degree in library science from the University of Illinois in 1952. She then earned a Ph.D. in higher education from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1989 and an Honorary Doctor of Law from Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, Virginia in 1989.
Elizabeth Matthews began her career as a librarian at the Virginia State Library in Richmond, Virginia, in 1948, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Ohio State University, Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia.
In 1964 Matthews accepted a position at Morris Library, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. She was a catalog librarian and instructor and became an assistant professor in 1972. From 1974 until 1990, Matthews continued as a catalog librarian and assistant professor at the Lesar Law School Library, Southern Illinois University. She retired in 1992 as preservation and special projects librarian and professor.
In addition, Matthews published several books and numerous articles on topics ranging from technical cataloging to genealogy and short stories.

Elizabeth Matthews was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, and Beta Phi Mu. Moreover, Matthews was active in many professional associations including the American Library Association, American Association of Law Libraries, and the Post-Doctoral Academy of Higher Education. She was also involved locally with the American Association of University Women and Rotary Club of Carbondale-Breakfast.
Elizabeth Matthews married Sidney E. Matthews on December 20, 1947. The couple had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth Matthews. They also had two grandsons, Matthew E. Wiley and Michael E. Wiley.
