In 1958 Elisabeth received Bachelor of Arts at Bryn Mawr College. After that she got Master of Arts at Boston University in 1969. Then she studied at Harvard University, where she earned Master of Arts in 1973 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1980.
Elizabeth worked in Worcester Art Museum as a research curator for Asiatic art in 1978 - 1981, as a consulting curator in 1981 - 1984, curator of Asian art since 1985, and director of curatorial affairs since 1995. She also was a member of collections and exhibitions committees in Higgins Armor Museum. In 1977 - 1984 she was an assistant professor in Tufts University. Since 1980 she is the research associate at Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies and lecturer in Harvard University. Currently she is also a teacher of adult education courses.
On June 8, 1957, Elizabeth married a physician Neil W. Swinton Jr., with whom she has four children: Neil W. Ill, Elizabeth Swinton Schoen, Barbara Swinton de Butts, and Anne Swinton Ruggles.
