Hospitality is a word heard often in Christian circles these days. It seems to be an important biblical principle. Yet in a busy world packaged in disposable cartons, less-than-immaculate homes, and microwave wonders, who knows how to practice real hospitality anymore? Drawing on years of experience, Elizabeth Skoglund walks you through the concept of hospitality and shows you that it may not be what so many think it is. With helpful hints and sound Bible knowledge, Elizabeth helps you see how easy it can be to share from your own gifts of the hearth.

(""Elizabeth Skoglund is right--the overall effect of Amy ...)
""Elizabeth Skoglund is right--the overall effect of Amy Carmichael's writings is comfort. Not the soft, pat-on-the-back sort, but the original cum fortis, meaning 'to stand alongside and strengthen.'"" --Ruth Bell Graham, best-selling author ""The books and poems of Amy Carmichael have been a great inspiration to me through the years. They have a cherished and prominent place in my library. All are well worn by frequent use in my own devotional life and ministry. However, I never fully appreciated the person behind these profound and incisive thoughts until I read Elizabeth Skoglund's remarkable book, Amma: The Life and Words of Amy Carmichael. The author, an outstanding counselor and distinguished writer, presses her own sensitive and responsive heart next to Amy's, and the result is a book dealing with the crucial issues of life today. You will meet the real Amy Carmichael, and her words will give you courage and strength in suffering, pain, discouragement, spiritual burnout, and most important of all, in how to maintain a vital trust relationship with the Lord as you live and work for Him by His power. This book will move you deeply. You will keep it close at hand and reread it often. It's crammed full of authentic hope, true comfort, and powerful inspiration."" --Loyd John Ogilvie, former chaplain of the U.S. Senate ""Elizabeth Skoglund has succeeded in drawing a very true picture of Amma herself and the values that were vitally important to her."" --Nancy E. Robbins, MD, attending physician for the last five years of Amma's life Elizabeth Ruth Skoglund is the author of more than twenty-five books. She has a private counseling practice in Burbank, CA.

(Hospitality with a Christian theme is the center of this ...)
Hospitality with a Christian theme is the center of this cookbook. Recipes from the Swedish tradition are the norm. To some it may a bit old-fashioned but for cookbook collectors you will want to find a copy. Helpful hints and food facts are scattered throughout. Most of the recipes can be found in other books (hence the 3 stars) but there are a few that I had never heard of before: Molasses Sticks- I grew up eating molasses crinkles so I'll try this to see if they are the same. Cupcakes are referred to as Candle Cakes. Others recipes such a Jellied Veal will be ones I'll pass on. There are lots of casseroles if you like to make these. I'll give this book to one of daughters someday hoping that one of them will enjoy reading and trying out new 'old' recipes.

("I would go into the deeps a hundred times to cheer a dow...)
"I would go into the deeps a hundred times to cheer a downcast spirit; it is good for me to have been afflicted that I might know how to speak a word in season to one that is weary" -Charles Spurgeon Millions read the words of the great nineteenth-century preacher Charles Spurgeon without knowing that his ministry succeeded during seasons of overwhelming emotional pain. Bright Days, Dark Nights offers a first look for many at the deep depression this great man of God encountered. Spurgeon confronted emotional problems with an acceptance based on physical, emotional, and spiritual causes and cures. Drawing from Spurgeon's enormous collection of sermons and conversations, author and therapist Elizabeth Skoglund provides insight into subjects such as confidence, depression, and anxiety. Readers will find strength and comfort for themselves and others in this unique blending of biblical principles and psychological wholeness.
