Crowley has an Master of Surgery in City and Regional Planning from Pratt Institute’s Graduate School of Architecture and a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude in Restoration and Preservation from State University of New York Fashion Institute of Technology where she was a Presidential Scholar.
She is a Democrat. The district includes portions of Cypress Hills, Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Forest Park, Glendale, Kew Gardens, Long Island City, Maspeth, Middle Village, Ozone Park, Rego Park, Richmond Hill, Ridgewood, Sunnyside, Woodhaven and Woodside in Queens. On March 19, 2012, Crowley announced that she would seek the Democratic nomination for New York"s 6th congressional district. Crowley faced New York State Assembly members Rory Lancman and Grace Meng in the primary election.
Crowley was first elected in November 2008, defeating the incumbent Republican, Anthony Como, and is the first Democrat and first woman to represent the district.
She was re-elected to a second term in November 2013 and currently serves as Chair of the Fire and Criminal Justice Services Committee. On council, Crowley has been the leading voice calling on the administration to make numerous fixes to the 911 system including hiring more personnel and changing the call taking process.
In May 2014 and in direct response to pressure from Crowley and union advocates, the de Blasio administration announced a broader study into the management of emergency calls at the same time as Crowley"s committee held an oversight hearing examining the 911 system.
