Ellen Hart is an American the award-winning mystery writer of the Jane Lawless and Sophie Greenaway series.

Background

Ellen Hart was born on August 10, 1949 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. Daughter of Herman Charles and Marjory Rowena (Anderson) Boehnhardt.

Education

She graduated from Ambassador College with her B.A. in 1971.

Career

She was a professional chef for 14 years; her mysteries include culinary elements. Hart began the Jane Lawless series in 1989, it is an early post-Stonewall example of the mystery genre in lesbian literature.

Hart has also taught introductory classes for mystery writers at The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis for many years.

Achievements

  • Hart received Lambda Literary Award for Best Lesbian Mystery for "A Small Sacrifice" in 1994 and Minnesota Book Award for Best Crime Fiction for "A Small Sacrifice" in 1995 and for "Faint Praise" in 1996.
