Her research interests include noncommutative algebra, representation theory, and homological algebra. in Statistics from Michigan State University in 1975. Since 2012 she has been treasurer of the Association for Women in Mathematics. Kirkman"s professional activities include serving on the American Mathematical Society (American Mathematical Society) Nominating Committee 2009-2011, as an Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Governor 2006-2008, on the Joint Data Committee of American Mathematical Society-American Statistical Association-MAA-IP Multimedia Subsystem-Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (2000– 2007 and 2009–present), directing the CBMS 2010 survey of undergraduate mathematical sciences programs, and involvement in several EDGE programs.
She is an associate editor of Communications in Algebra.
In 2012, Kirkman became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
