Lubell began her career as a contributing editor of Arts Magazine in 1972 and had held it for seven years. In 1976, she became a founder and editor of Womanart Magazine, where she worked until 1978. Then in 1977, Ellen took a position of a columnist of Soho Weekly News. In 1979, she was appointed an instructor at School of Visual Arts. In 1981, Lubell held a position of a contributor of "Art in America", where she served until 1985.
Also in 1984, she became a director of public relations at Gerstman & Meyers Inc. and held it for five years. Also Ellen worked as a freelancer, columnist and publicist of "The Village Voice" from 1984 to 1991. In 1991, she held the position of a director of communications at Inform, Inc. Four years later Lubell was appointed a communications director of Child Care Action Campaign. In 1999 she became a director of public relations at Children`s Aid Society.
