Berg received a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University in 1949. Six years later he earned his Master of Arts degree from Columbia University. In 1960, Elliot was given a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Berg was a sergeant in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947. He began his career as an assistant professor of economics at Harvard University in 1960. Four years later he took a position of a team leader of Harvard Advisory Group. Then in 1966, Elliot became an associate professor of economics at the University of Michigan. Also he served as a professor of economics at the same university from 1967 to 1983.
In 1970, Berg was appointed a director of the Center for Research and Economic Development, where he worked until 1978. In 1982, he held a position of a president of Elliot Berg Associates, Inc., where he served until 1991. Also in 1982, Elliot became an adjunct professor at the University of Auvergne and held the position for eighteen years. In 1990, he took a position of a vice president of Development Alternatives Inc., where he worked until 1995.

1988On September 22, 1956 Elliot Berg married Nancy Gouinlock. They have three children.
