Elspeth Moncrieff received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1981. Two years later, she obtained a diploma from the University of Newcastle.
Elspeth Moncrieff served as a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London from 1984 to 1987. Then, she spent three years in Antique Collecting Magazine as a deputy editor. In 1990, Moncrieff occupied the same post in Apollo magazine where she spent a couple of years.
