(Trieste Publishing has a massive catalogue of classic boo...)
Trieste Publishing has a massive catalogue of classic book titles. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Readers interested in bulk purchases are invited to contact us directly to enquire about our tailored bulk rates.

(A hIM (ABRAHAM). Revealed at Makkah, INTRODUCTION. A ccoR...)
A hIM (ABRAHAM). Revealed at Makkah, INTRODUCTION. A ccoRT)iNO to the commentators, the title of this chapter is due to the meution of the Patriarch A braham in ver. 38. Like most of the Makkan chapters, this one relates entirely to the controversy between Muhammad and the nnbelieving Quraish. In it the infidels are warned by the example of those who rejected the former prophets, and they are threatened with the direst punishment of hell, where they shall be ever dying without being permitted to die. The purpose of Muhammad in relating the stories of the former prophets and of the destruction of their enemies is to impress the Qundsh with the dreadful consequences of their rejection of him. Probable Date of the Revelations, All authorities agree that this chapter belongs to Makkuh. The commentators, however, would make vers. 33 and 34 refer to the Quraish, who were disgraced at fiadr, and thus relegate this passage to Madlna. There is, however, no good reason for such an interpretation of this passage. See notes there. A side from the general spirit of the revelations in this chapter, we have as data for fixing their date the statements of vers. 16 and YOU lU. (Excerpt from A Comprehensive Commentary on the Qurán, Vol...)
Excerpt from A Comprehensive Commentary on the Qurán, Vol. 1: Comprising Sale's Translation and Preliminary Discourse, With Additional Notes and Emendations; Together With a Complete Index to the Text, Preliminary Discourse, and Notes Quran' on any particular subject, with a very small amount of labour. In regard to the Spelling of proper names, I have invariably Romanised the original form of the words, except when quoting from living authors, in which case I have felt obliged to retain the spelling peculiar to each writer. In order to facilitate the study of individual chapters, and to help a better understanding of the various revela tions, I have prefixed to each chapter a brief introduction, showing the circumstances under which the revelations were made, the date of their publication by Muhammad, and also giving a brief analysis of each chapter as to its teaching. (In presenting to the public the first volume of AC ompreh...)
In presenting to the public the first volume of AC omprehensim Comvientary on theQ urdn, I think it necessary to make a brief statement as to the reasons which have led to the publication of this work, and the object sought to be attained thereby. The idea of preparing such a work grew out of the wants which I felt in the pursuit of my own study of the Quran, and in the work of a missionary among Muslims. The time required to gather up the results of the labours of various writers on I slam; the difficulty of preserving these results in a form suitable for convenient reference; and the still greater difficulty of bringing the truth thus acquired to bear on the minds of Muslims, owing to the absence of any medium whereby the proof-texts, referred to in theE nglish works by chapter and cerse, may be found in the original copies current among Muhanimadans, where no such mode of reference is used ;all these suggested the great need of a work which would remove in some degree at least these obstacles to the study of the Quran, and thus promote a better knowledge of I slam among missionaries. It will thus be seen that I have not laboured simply to make a book. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Elwood Morris Wherry, the son of James and Sarah (Nesbit) Wherry, was born on March 26, 1843 in South Bend, Pa.
Having received his preparation at Eldersridge Academy, he entered Jefferson (later Washington and Jefferson) College, and was graduated with the degree of A. B. in 1862.
He organized a select school at Waynesburg, Pa. , and taught there until October 1864. Meanwhile, he united with the Presbyterian church of the town. Entering Princeton Theological Seminary in the fall of 1864, he was graduated in 1867. On May 8 of that year he was ordained by the Donegal Presbytery. The following October he and his wife sailed for India as missionaries of the Presbyterian Church. There he served until 1889, with the usual interruptions of furloughs, and again from 1898 until 1922. Joining the Panjab Mission, he was first stationed at Rawalpindi and was soon afterward transferred to Ludhiana (Lodiana), where he served until 1883 as writer, editor, and superintendent of the mission press. Thereafter for five years he was professor of Old Testament literature and church history in the resuscitated theological seminary at Saharanpur, U. P. , and stated clerk of the Synod of India. From 1889 until 1898 he was stationed in Chicago, Ill. , as district secretary of the American Tract Society, having resigned from his mission to educate his two sons and five daughters in America. Reappointed to India in 1898, he resumed service in Ludhiana, where until 1922 he was chiefly occupied with educational and literary work. He was moderator of his Synod in 1900 and labored for the union of the Presbyterian churches in India which was consummated at Allahabad in 1904. He was elected moderator at the General Assembly, Ludhiana, in December 1909. Returning to America in 1922, he took up his residence in Cincinnati. He died of heart failure while visiting in Indiana, Pa. , and was buried in Cincinnati.
Wherry's literary work, both as editor and author, was conspicuous and significant. He was the founder of the Urdu periodical Nur Afshan, which he edited at Ludhiana, 1872-83 and 1899-1909. He composed many Urdu tracts, including an outline of ancient history and a refutation of Islam, translated into that tongue an adaptation of J. C. Moffat's Church History in Brief, and Edward Sell's Historical Development of the Quran, and arranged an index of the Roman Urdu Koran. In 1882-84 he published his monumental Comprehensive Commentary of the Quran, in four volumes. Among his other works are Zeinab the Panjabi (copr. 1895), Islam; or the Religion of the Turk (1896), The Muslim Controversy (1905), Islam and Christianity in India and the Far East (1907), and Our Missions in India (1926). In addition, he edited, either independently or jointly, Missions at Home and Abroad (1895), Woman in Missions (1894), The Mohammedan World of To-day (1906), Methods of Missionary Work among Moslems (1906), and Islam and Missions (1911). Besides the offices already mentioned, he served as corresponding secretary of the World's Congress of Missions in 1893, as chairman of his mission's publication committee, and as editor of its annual reports. He was an associate member of the Victoria Institute, London. A building of the Ewing Christian High School at Ludhiana bears the name of Wherry Hall in his honor.
