Studied at St. Mark's College, Chelsea. With Walter Crane and others helped to found the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, 1888. Is still a member of the Committee.
Lectured on Printing during the first show of the Society in New Gallery. Helped William Morris in establishing the Kelmscott Press at Hammersmith, 1890. In conjunction with T. J.
Cobden-Sanderson founded the Doves Press,1900-1909. Member of Jury for Typography, Paris Exhibition, 1900. Member of Fine Arts and Liberal Arts Committees, Royal Commission, St. Louis Exposition, 1904.
Member of Royal Commission for Exhibitions at Brussels 1910, and Rome and Turin 1911. Chairman, Advisory Sub-Committee London County Council School of Photo-Engraving and Lithography. Chairman Consultative Committee for London County Council School for Book Production.
Member of Council, Society of Antiquaries, 10, and of London Topographical Society. Committee of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Past Master of the Art Workers’ Guild (Master 1904); process engraver and printer.
