Emil Clemens Horst, German merchant, farmer. Member Grange, Farmers’ Union.


Horst, Emil Clemens was born on March 18, 1867 in Tuttlingen, Germany. Son of Ernst Paul and Maria Barbara (Manz) Horst.


Brought by parents to the United States, 1871. Student College City of New York, 1885-1886, Cooper Union, New York City, 1886-1889.


Employed, 1886-1889, by Red Star Line, Knauth Nachod and Kuhne (foreign bankers in New York), A. S. Lascelles & Company (exporters, New York) and Lilienthal Brothers (hop merchants, New York). In 1889 formed partnership with Paul and Louis Horst and Frank Jones under name of Horst Brothers, hop merchants, New York and San Francisco. Organized, 1898, and president E. Clemens Horst Company, San Francisco.

Engaged in growing hops and fruit. Also canning and packing fruits and exporting barley. Inventor of the hop picking machine and natural air driers of hops.


Member Grange, Farmers’ Union.
