(Cape May began as Cape May Island, where families journey...)
Cape May began as Cape May Island, where families journeyed to enjoy wide white beaches and gentle surf during the early nineteenth century. With the advent of steamships and railroads, the quiet village soon became America's first seaside resort town. Despite its charm and elegance, visitors slowed in the 1880s, as a series of mysterious fires claimed some of its most beloved structures. As the twentieth century dawned, Cape May's failure to modernize ultimately became its salvation. By the 1960s, visitors were once again flocking to this seaside destination to enjoy its quaint Victorian charm. Experience the elegant Chalfonte Hotel, stately Congress Hall and the classic Cape May Boardwalk with local historian Emil Salvini.

( In this richly illustrated celebration of the nation's ...)
In this richly illustrated celebration of the nation's oldest seaside resort, Emil R. Salvini leads the reader through Cape May's two hundred tumultuous years, which have forever earned it the moniker "Queen of the Seaside Resorts." During its beginning as a coastal getaway not for New Jerseyans but for Philadelphians, middle-class families would endure the two-day journey to the site then known as Cape Island. With the advent of the steamboat and the railroad, the Cape became the premier destination for vacationers from surrounding areas. In the 1880s, however, traffic slowed and the city entered a period of decline. Subsequent attempts at modernization failed, which actually saved the quaint wooden village that is visited by so many today. Eventually, residents realized that the future of the Cape lay in the past. Preservation advocates succeeded in reviving interest in the resort, resulting in Cape May being designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Readers of The Summer City by the Sea will be tempted to take the last exit off the Garden State Parkway. While fashionable resorts come and go, Cape May endures, a tribute to its tenacity and tradition

(The most famous athlete of his era, Hobey Baker dazzled t...)
The most famous athlete of his era, Hobey Baker dazzled teammates and rivals alike. Handsome, charming and supremely athletic, he is the only individual to be inducted in both the Hockey Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. Three years after graduating from Princeton, Baker fought in World War One along with flying ace Eddie Rickenbaker against the deadly Flying Circus of Baron Richthofen, the Red Knight of Germany. Baker's untimely death at age 27 in France just as the Great War ended has been shrouded in mystery for almost ninety years. Salvini puts the mystery to rest after all of these years. Fellow Princetonian F. Scott Fitzgerald described Baker as, "an ideal worthy of everything in my enthusiastic admiration, yet consummated and expressed in a human being who stood within ten feet of me."
