Although commonly known to the layman as a technique that can affect the physical world, bring wealth, and even add to one's IQ, autosuggestion is actually a technique intended to complement the use of medicine. It was developed by apothecary Emile Coué from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. In 1932, German psychiatrist Johannes Schultz developed and published autogenic training, a relaxation technique influenced by the Coué method. The Coué method centers on a routine repetition of a particular expression according to a specified ritual in a given physical state at the beginning and at the end of each day. Against the belief that a strong conscious will constitutes the best path to success, Coué maintained that curing some of our troubles requires a change in our subconscious/unconscious thought, which can only be achieved by using our imagination. Although stressing that he was not primarily a healer but one who taught others to heal themselves, Coué claimed to have effected organic changes through autosuggestion.

Émile Coué de la Châtaigneraie was born at Troyes, France on Feburary 26, 1857. Coué's family, from the Brittany region of France and with origins in French nobility, had only modest means.
A brilliant pupil in school, he initially intended to become an analytical chemist. However, he eventually abandoned these studies, as his father, who was a railroad worker, was in a precarious financial state. Coué then decided to become a pharmacist and graduated with a degree in pharmacology in 1876.
From 1882 to 1910 Coué was an apothecary, but in 1901 he began to study the psychology of suggestion and hypnotism with A. A. Liébault and H. Bernheim and made a profession of psychotherapeutical healings. In 1910 he opened a clinic at Nancy, where he proceeded to apply his psychological method of healing by helping others to heal themselves. Self-help was a fundamental of his technique, typified by his formula, "Every day in every way I am getting better and better, " which the patient repeated over and over to himself. He lectured in both England and the United States on his method of treatment through autosuggestion, attracting enormous audiences in both countries. Coué was the author of a number of books, including Self-mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion. He died at Nancy, France, on July 2, 1926.
