His career-high singles ranking was World Number. 7. In men"s doubles, Sánchez captured 50 men"s doubles titles, including three at Grand Slam events.

Sánchez is the brother of Javier Sánchez Vicario and former World Number. 1 Arantxa Sánchez Vicario.

Emilio and Javier faced each other 12 times during their professional careers, with Emilio winning 10 of their matches. In the third round of the 1992 United States Open, Emilio defeated Javier 5–7, 6–1, 6–7, 7–6, 6–4. Sánchez retired from the professional tour in 1997.
Coaching career
In 2009, he signed a contract with the Brazilian tennis confederation to coordinate the sport in Brazil.
