Emily Ratajkowski is an American model and actress. She is considered one of the sex symbols of the modern era. She made her big break debut as an actress in Gone Girl (2014). She is also an advocate for women's health issues as a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood.
Background
Ethnicity:
Emily Ratajkowski is 25% Polish, 25% Ashkenazi Jewish, and 50% mix of Irish, with some German and English, and remote Welsh.
Emily O'Hara Ratajkowski was born on June 7, 1991, in Westminster, London, the only child of American parents, Kathleen Anne Balgley and John David "J.D." Ratajkowski. Her father, John, is a painter and teacher and mother, Kathleen, a professor of English.
Ratajkowski spent the first five years of her life in London before finally settling down in San Diego, California. Before leaving London, Ratajkowski had become obsessed with theatre. She also tried soccer, acting, and ballet before modeling. She then took up a couple of roles and even tried her hand at ballet, and eventually started modeling.
As a child, Ratajkowski spent a significant amount of time in Europe. Visiting nude beaches in Europe exposed the young Ratajkowski to the nude female figure in photography and art during her formative years. Works of prominent photographers, including that of her father, left a deep impact on young Emily’s mind.
Education
While attending the North Coast Repertory Theatre School, Emily Ratajkowski started her first formal role in the movie The Little Match Girl as a child actress and also for Theatre production. She also attended San Dieguito Academy High School in San Diego at the age of 15.
In 2009, Ratajkowski enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) but attended it just for a year. The school’s ideology conflicted with hers which led her to drop out and focused on modeling.
After an acting coach suggested Ratajkowski try modeling, she signed with Ford Models at 14. Though she was 5-foot-7, her modeling career flourished. She did a teen print catalog modeling for Kohl's and Nordstrom. She also took up several minor uncredited roles in television and film projects. Ratajkowski's first acting job was two episodes of iCarly in 2009-2010; as her family didn't have a TV, she didn't know the show. Before her Blurred Lines breakthrough, she was also seen in a Carl's Jr. ad.
In 2010, Ratajkowski began a career in modeling. She posed for various artistic erotic magazines. Her bold look coupled with her rawness earned her roles in two high-profile music videos. She also appeared in a bunch of commercials during this time. One early project for Ratajkowski was being photographed for Treats, an artistic erotica magazine. Robin Thicke saw her on the cover, which led to her being hired for Blurred Lines music video, where Emily appeared topless. The video received criticism, and its uncensored version was temporarily banned from YouTube. Though the video got into controversy and was labeled sexist and misogynistic by some, she believed that it did not objectify her or any other women, and instead talked about female power and sexual freedom.
Ratajkowski was initially uninterested when she was contacted about Blurred Lines. However, hearing about the female director's playful vision convinced her to participate. Talking about the project in 2016, Ratajkowski said, "Like any art, there’s a million ways to interpret it. All I can say is that when a woman is naked, that’s not immediately anti-feminist. I have no apologies for it, and I’m not ashamed at all."
Prior to making Blurred Lines, Ratajkowski made an appearance in the video for Maroon 5's Love Somebody, wearing body paint and getting close to Adam Levine. She also was in Fast Car by Taio Cruz.
Blurred Lines proved to be a breakthrough in Ratajkowski’s career. It stayed at the number one spot on the Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart for twelve consecutive weeks, making it the longest-running number-one song of the decade. Furthermore, it became the number one song of 2013 Music Charts in countries like Canada, Ireland, The Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Almost abruptly, Ratajkowski had turned into a sex symbol and became a permanent fixture on several highly-prized fashion magazine polls and lists. Rolling Stones, Sports Illustrated, FHM, and AskMen listed her among their hottest sex symbols.
After Blurred Lines, Ratajkowski was in a Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. In the fall of 2015, she made her runway debut for Marc Jacobs during New York Fashion Week. Ratajkowski has appeared on multiple magazine covers, including Cosmopolitan, British Glamour, and Marie Claire. She's been in ad campaigns for DKNY (in one, she walked the streets of New York with a dog while wearing lingerie) and is an ambassador for Kérastase and Paco Rabanne Parfum.
Banking on her newfound recognition, Ratajkowski soon found herself supporting roles in major films. Ratajkowski made her film debut playing Andie, the mistress of Ben Affleck's character, in Gone Girl (2014). She got the part after Affleck saw her in Blurred Lines and mentioned her to director David Fincher.
In 2015 Ratajkowski appeared as the love interest for Zac Efron's dance music DJ in We Are Your Friends and was romanced by Adrian Grenier in Entourage.
Ratajkowski appeared in the Russian-language music video “Inseparable” (sometimes translated as “Indivisible”) with Russian entertainer Dima Bilan as a photographer and Ratajkowski as his muse.
In Cruise (2018), a film set in the 1980s, Ratajkowski has a lead role as a Jewish college student who adopts an alter ego to walk on the wild side, then falls in love with a working-class Italian-American boy (played by Spencer Boldman).
Ratajkowski had a villainous turn in In Darkness (2018), starring Natalie Dormer; played Mallory, a model suffering from low self-esteem, in the Amy Schumer headliner I Feel Pretty (2018); and traveled to Italy to act opposite Aaron Paul in the thriller Welcome Home. On March 29, 2018, Ratajkowski was cast as a series regular in the NBC pilot Bright Futures. The yet unaired pilot was compared to Friends and How I Met Your Mother. The show was not included in NBC's 2018–2019 schedule. In 2019 she is set to appear in Lying and Stealing alongside Theo James.
Ratajkowski has designed suits for her own Inamorata swimwear. In 2017 she co-designed a bag collection for clothing brand The Kooples; one of these was The Emily Bag. A portion of the proceeds from a line of dresses designed by Ratajkowski in 2015 went to support Planned Parenthood.

Religion
Ratajkowski's father was raised Roman Catholic, whereas her mother was raised Jewish, but she hasn’t mentioned whether she follows either religion.
Politics
Ratajkowski endorsed Bernie Sanders in the 2016 presidential election of the United States, she has said if she hypothetically ran for president her platform would also be redistributing wealth in America.
Views
Ratajkowski is an advocate for women's health issues as a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood. As a self-identified feminist, she has received both support and criticism for her views on sexual expression.
Ratajkowski described the pressure that she endured as a youth around her sexuality and her thoughts on female sexual empowerment, in Lena Dunham's Lenny Letter newsletter on February 16, 2016. Elle magazine, Esquire magazine, and Harper's Bazaar republished her letter. Critics, including Glamour magazine's Hayley Spencer, The Huffington Post's Jenavieve Hatch, and Rachael Moon of the Daily Mirror, praised it. According to Cosmopolitan magazine's Nikki Kinstlinger and Georgia Simmonds of Marie Claire, Ratajkowski finds self-empowerment in defining and owning the expression of her sexuality and body. Salon's Erin Coulehan described the essay's identification of a societal catch-22, in which showcasing female sexuality that may "offend, excite, or create envy" leads to criticism and body shaming. InStyle's Isabella Silvers concurred that "female sexuality isn't always for the benefit of someone else". Charlotte Gill of The Independent admitted that she was in the minority in finding the letter "rambling" and "dull".
Ratajkowski defended Kim Kardashian from criticism when Kardashian posted a controversial naked selfie on Instagram in March 2016, saying that women have the right to "express their sexuality and share their bodies however they choose". Then, Kardashian and Ratajkowski jointly advocated via social media for female sexual empowerment and against body shaming; nearly one million social media followers responded positively, and prominent global media outlets took notice.
Following Ratajkowski's letter and social media statement, the controversy about her feminism heightened. Piers Morgan stated that Ratajkowski's form of feminism was a misguided affront to true feminism, labeling it pseudo-feminist gibberish. After Morgan wrote that "feminism, as it was intended, is dead", the Chicago Tribune's Heidi Stevens, as well as The Daily Telegraph's Helen Pankhurst (Emmeline Pankhurst's great-granddaughter) said that Ratajkowski neither killed nor bolstered feminism. Women's Wear Daily's Taylor Harris questioned the impact of Ratajkowski's feminism. The Independent's Gill questioned Ratajkowski's feminism, saying that her professional activities "continued to advocate industries that treat us as pieces of meat". Heather Saul of The Independent wrote in support of Ratajkowski in an article subtitled "Ratajkowski is becoming an important feminist voice in the debate over female censorship and sexuality". New York's Allie Jones called Ratajkowski "the best feminist celeb".
Quotations:
"The attention from the fashion world is something that I didn't expect. I've shot with Bruce Weber and met Karl Lagerfeld. Having that kind of attention is really exciting."
"Nudity isn't something people should take offense to."
"I have great childhood memories cow-tipping, going off and getting lost in the bog for hours, and coming home covered in dirt."
"I think I had really good parents. I got really lucky. They said, 'You're a woman; enjoy yourself and believe that you can do things.'"
Personality
Exposure to the nude female figure in photography and art during her formative years, including the work of her father, as well as the photography of Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts, prepared Ratajkowski for nude work. She is comfortable with the naked body, and states, “We have this culture of men, especially, watching pornography, but then [they are] offended by a classic nude portrait or photograph, and I’ve never felt that way.”
In September 2014, Ratajkowski was a victim in a female celebrity hacking and internet posting wave of stolen nude iCloud photographs.
Physical Characteristics:
Being slim makes her look taller but Emily is shorter than many models standing 170cm tall (5'7"). Emily maintains her weight via the blessing of good genetics and self-care. Her workout doesn’t happen in the gym-she prefers outdoor hikes and regular yoga sessions to keep in shape. Her measurements are 89-61-86 cm and her bra size is 32C. She has dark brown hair and eyes.
