Emma helped her husband to elevate to the throne of France in 923 with the help of her brother, Hugh the Great. Emma defended her husband's right to the throne against the Carolingian claimant, Charles III "The Simple" and her brother-in-law, Herbert II of Vermandois. In 927 she defended the important town of Laon against a siege by Herbert II; after being forced to give up the town, she returned to besiege the town with her own forces before finally yielding to Herbert II at the request of her husband. She captured Avalon in 931 and in 933 led the siege of Chateau Thierry against Herbert II with King Ralph's army. The castle was reportedly surrendered to Emma and not to her husband.
Emma of France married Rudolph of Burgundy in 923, and she became Queen Consort of France due to her marriage.
