He began his education in 1926 in Kinshasa at the Salvation Army School and completed it at Albert I College. While working with a business firm in Kinshasa he went to classes at the Institute of Political Studies and took a correspondence course in philosophy with the College of Science and Art at Paris.
His first political activities were in organising a society of Bazombe emigrants on December 23, 1956, called “Association Mutuelle des Ressortissants de Zombo” or ASSOMIZO for short.
After attempts at a merger with Holden Roberto’s Uniao das Populacoes de Angola failed, ASSOMIZO was replaced on September 21, 1960, by a Bazombo organisation named Alliance des Ressortissants de Zombo (ALIAZO). He began editing a magazine called “Mondo” in July 1961, allowing a free discussion of nationalist problems, even a forum for rivals. On January 15, 1962, he was confirmed as vice-president when a party conference at Kinshasa broadened its political aims beyond Bazombo and relaunched itself as Partido Democrato de Angola (PDA).
He led the PDA team in the 10 negotiations with UPA which reached agreement on the formation of the Frente Nacional de Libertacao de Angola (FNLA) on March 27, 1962. He became vice-president of the government in exile a week later. Despite differences with Roberto he has kept faith with his Bazombo supporters and continued to work with the liberation movement, making tours in 1968 of Africa and Europe seeking support and financial assistance for FNLA.
