1884 arrested for involvement in self-educational circles. Late 1885 exiled to Ufa Province. 1889 moved to Zurich, but deported in same year.
Until 1890 member, Narodnaya volya (People's Will) group. From 1901 member, Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party. First lit work printed in French Socialist press
From 1897 contributed to Russian legal and illegal press 1901, together with Yu. Steklov and Doctorate. B. Ryazanov, founded Social-Democratic Bor’ba (Struggle) group.
After schism in Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party joined Mensheviks. 1905 member, ed staff, Menshevik organ Nachalo: 1910 sided with the liquidationists. Member, Social-Democratic faction of State Duma.
In this connection 1911 arrested and after six months’ imprisonment exiled from Saint St. Petersburg. During World War 1 defensist. 1917 ed, rightist cooperators’ newspaper Vlast ’ Naroda: worked for Institute of Marx and Engels.
