Background

Clark, Emmons was born on October 14, 1827 in Huron, New York, United States. Son of William and Sophronia (Tillotson) Clark.

Education

Graduate Hamilton College, 1847.

Career

In commercial pursuits in New York, 1850-1866. Appointed fire commissioner, Metropolitan district, 1868, and consul to Havre by President Harrison, 1889, but declined both positions. Enlisted private Company B, 7th regiment, N.G.S.N.Y., 1857.

Promoted 1st sergeant, 1859. Second lieutenant, 1859. First lieutenant, 1859.

Captain, 1860; mustered into United States service as captain, 1861. Served as such in campaigns, 1861-1862-63. Promoted to colonel 7th regiment, 1804, and after serving in that capacity 25 years was, by special act of legislature of New York, promoted to brevetted brigadier general Secretary Board of Health, New York, 1866-1901.
