The Yellow Emperor (Huangdi) is a legendary ruler and ancestor of the Chinese people who is said to have lived in the third millennium B.C. for 100-118 years. He is credited with having invented Chinese medicine; various religious practices, including worship of the sun, moon, and five planets; and technological inventions, like the compass and calendar.

Career

The Yellow Emperor or Huangdi (also transliterated as Huang-ti and Hwang-ti) is a legendary Chinese sovereign and culture hero, included among the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. Tradition holds that he reigned from 2697–2597 or 2696–2598 BC. His cult became prominent in the late Warring States and early Han period, when he was portrayed as the originator of the centralized state, a patron of esoteric arts and a cosmic ruler. Traditionally credited with numerous inventions and innovations, he is regarded as the initiator of Chinese civilization and said to be the ancestor of all Huaxia Chinese.

Achievements

  • It is believed there were many inventions originated from the time of Yellow Emperor, such as characters, ships and carts, medicines, music, sericiculture [Silk cultivation] and some daily utensils. Thus Huangdi was said to be the founder of Chinese civilization.

    Huangdi is also regarded as the central god among the five gods in the heaven in Chinese mythology.

    He developed a strong army with which he defeated Shen Nongshi at Banquan (Henan Province).
