Emura Sensai studied medicine under Soha Hata.
Emura Sensai served Kiyomasa Kato, famous retainer of Hideyoshi Toyotomi. After the death of Kiyomasa, about in 1624, Tadamasa Mori, Lord of Mimasaka Province (Okayama Prefecture), courteously asked him to serve him and Sensai complied. Even at 90, his sight and hearing showed no signs of decline. Upon attaining the age of 100, he was granted a gold fan by the emperor. It is said he had the looks of a gentlemanly millionaire.
He was a good waka poet.
