遠藤シモン Simon
Date of Endo Shimon's birth is unknown.
Converted from Buddhism to Catholic faith, Endo Shimon was baptized at the age of 14. Three years afterward, he became a preacher of the Jesuit Society. Christianity was prohibited by the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1614 and he was expelled to the Philippines. He, however, returned after one year, following his Spanish teacher. He encouraged Japanese Christians in the face of the cruel persecution by the ShoKunate. In 1623, Shogun Iemitsu decreed harsher measures against the Christians. Upon his teacher being arrested, Shimon surrendered himself. They and other believers, totaling 40 in number, were burned to death in Edo in December, 1623.
