Ensei Karashima lived in the beginning at Kumamoto and was a very diligent student of the classics.
Career
Struck by his ability the Shōgunate appointed him to teach the Chinese classics at Shoheiko (Shogunate College in Edo), a rare distinction which made his clan very proud of him. Later was appointed teacher at his clan school, but left to teach at Edo (1792).
