Career
He held several positions at the United Nations and a driving force behind the Special Committee against Apartheid (of which he was Secretary from 1963–1965) and its Centre against Apartheid (of which he was Director from 1976–1983). He was awarded Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards of India in 2000. The University of The University of Durban-Westville awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1995 in recognition of his contribution to the struggle against apartheid and scholarly work on South Africa.
