Admitted to New York bar, 1824, soon became one of most distinguished admiralty lawyers of the time. Deputy clerk United States District Court for Southern New York, 1824. Member New York.C. Common Council, 1840.

Public school trustee, New York City, 1842. Member of New York State Legislature, 1848. Member New York City Board Education, 1850-1863, president.

Trustee Williams College, 1855. Regent University State New York, 1855-1880, chancellor, 1878-1880. A founder College City New York.
