A native of Atlanta, Giddens graduated with a degree in environmental biology from Georgia Technical and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Career
His father is educator Don Giddens. He finished 20th in the men"s K-1 slalom event at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. They now own a brewpub, along with brewer Kyle Smith, in Kernville, California.
