Gleacher attended the Western Illinois University. In 1963, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Northwestern University. Four years later Eric was given a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Gleacher served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps from 1963 to 1966. He began his career at Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., where he was hired to do corporate finance and worked in the firm`s buying department.
In 1973, Eric became a partner of this company. Five years later Gleacher founded the mergers and acquisitions department of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. Then in 1985 he headed the mergers and acquisitions group at Morgan Stanley and held it for five years.
In 1990, Gleacher founded his own firm, Gleacher Partners (nowadays Gleacher & Co), which he sold to National Westminster Bank in 1996. In 2013, he resigned as chairman of his advisory boutique, Gleacher & Co.
Gleacher is on the board of trustees for the Hospital for Special Surgery and Northwestern University.
Eric Gleacher married Susan Gleacher, with whom he divorced in October 1978. They have 4 children. On December 7, 1978 he married Anne Gilchrist.
