Eric worked for Barclays Bank in Long Eaton, Derbyshire. He would return home after a day's work and spend the evening writing. He was a regular contributor to the Argosy magazine. His first book "Beefy Jones" was published in 1957. Morning’s at Seven, published in 1965, was made into a film which received the Goldene Leinwand award in Germany as the year’s most popular film. Among his works was a fictionalized account of the life of William Shakespeare, titled Sweet Will. Several of his other books depicted English life as it was between the world wars, including "The Wind Brings Up the Rain", "Summer Awakening", "Of Human Frailty", "The Lamplight and the Stars", and "Wenn der Tiger schlafen geht". He died on October 16, 1996.
Eric was married, had one son, two granddaughters and five great grandchildren.
