Erica Sabiti was born in 1903 (though not baptised until later in life) in the village of Nyarunga in Ankole, western Uganda.
Educated at Mbarara High School, King’s College, Budo and Makerere University College, where he did teacher training from 1925 to 1928. Afterwards he taught for two years before he “met Christ”, an experience that was to change his whole life.
He did his ordination training at Bishop Tucker College, Mukono and at Kampala’s Namirembe Cathedral. After 26 years as a parish priest, he was consecrated Bishop of Ruwenzori, a diocese which covers Toro, Bunyoro and Mbogo in Zaire.
In 1966 he became the first African Archbishop of Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. In 1972 he was enthroned as Bishop of Kampala, a newly established diocese, now known as the diocese of the Archbishop.
An Anglican born in Ankole, a largely Catholic part of Uganda, Erica Sabiti is an intensely religious man, who has dedicated himself to the work of the church since he received the call in 1939 and first decided to become ordained. His wife had already decided to devote her life to God two years earlier and has worked closely with him throughout his ministry. He has steadfastly avoided political entanglements and has advised his bishops and clergy to follow a similar policy.
