Erich Buchholz was born on January 31, 1891 in Bromberg, Province of Posen, Germany (now Bydgoszcz, Poland).
Erich began his career as a teacher at a primary school in Berlin, painting in his free time.
In 1918 the artist designed his first abstract stage sets for the Albert-Theater in Dresden. His first solo exhibition took place in 1921 at the Galerie Der Sturm in Berlin and included a series of sixteen woodblocks.
During the 1920s Erich took part in the annual jury-free art exhibitions in Berlin. He also participated in international events such as the First Exhibition of Modern Art in Bucharest.
Buchholz also had his own studio in Berlin, where such avant-garde artists, as Hannah Höch, Kurt Schwitters and Raoul Hausmann met.
In 1923, Buchholz's interest drifted towards architecture and he started working on the use of shell forms in buildings, such as the design of an egg-form house.
The artist settled down in Germendorf in 1925, where he supported his family through market gardening and by raising poultry. He continued to paint until 1933 when the National Socialists named his works "degenerate". He was arrested several times and received an interdiction to paint and participate in exhibitions. Erich resumed his activity after the war in 1945.
During the 1950s and 1960s, the artist held a number of solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States. He also participated in different art exhibitions, such as the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in Paris.

Quotations: "The eternal law of recurrence – as in the spiral – is opposed to the law of the eternal non-return – as in the parabola which is a distorted spiral. The former is relative, the latter is absolute. Nothing ever returns."
Erich married Lucia Krüger in 1918. The couple gave birth to three children — Urs, Eila and Mo.
