Bramah attended Manchester Grammar School, but dropped out of it at the age of 16.
At the age of 16 Bramah went into farming. He first worked as a farm pupil and then in his own right. It was while farming that he began to work on a provincial newspaper. Later he wrote a book about his adventure in farming which found few buyers and was remaindered and pulped.
Bramah obtained a position as secretary to Jerome K. Jerome and rose to become editor of Jerome's magazine "Today". After leaving Jerome he edited other journals ("The Minster" from 1895 till 1896) for a publishing firm that later went into bankruptcy.
He was also a contributor of short stories to magazines.
As a writer Bramah created Kai Lung, an itinerant storyteller. The first book about him was named "The Wallet of Kai Lung". Bramah also wrote political science fiction. In 1914, Bramah created Max Carrados, a blind detective, in the "Max Carrados" book.
