He also captained his country. Ernest William Taylor was born on 20 February 1869 in Newcastle upon Tyne. Taylor, nicknamed Little Billie, made his international debut on 6 February 1892 at Whalley Range, Manchester in the England vs Ireland match.

He played his final match for England on 4 February 1899 at Lansdowne Road in the Ireland vs England match.
